Toast IQ Pricing: Is $499/Month Worth It?

Published

Toast charges $499/mo for Toast IQ Grow and staffs it with a human Marketing Success Manager. Here is what that buys, what the math comes to, and what the bundle says about the product.

$499 a month. That is what Toast charges for Toast IQ Grow, its AI marketing tier.

It is worth understanding what that number buys before deciding whether it stings.

What $499/mo actually includes

Toast IQ Grow bundles two things: an AI Marketing Agent, and a dedicated human Marketing Success Manager. Not a support line — an assigned person whose job is to make the marketing work.

Toast has published pilot results for it, and they are good: participating restaurants saw roughly +8% on average, with the top quartile around +40%. Those are real numbers from real restaurants, and anyone comparing honestly should say so plainly rather than wave them away.

So the fair summary is: Toast IQ Grow appears to work, and Toast staffs it with a human to make sure it does.

The tell is the human

That second half is the interesting part.

If an AI marketing agent could do the work on its own, there would be no reason to put a Marketing Success Manager in the box. Bundling a person is not a generosity — it is an admission about what the software does unaided. Toast priced the pair together because the pair is what delivers the result.

This is the difference between AI that answers and AI that acts. An assistant surfaces a suggestion and waits. An operator writes the campaign, publishes the page, changes the price, and tells you afterward what it did. The first kind needs a human alongside it. The second kind is the product.

$499 × 12 = $5,988 per year, on top of point of sale and payment processing. For a restaurant doing $1M a year, that is roughly six tenths of a point of revenue for the marketing layer alone.

Where this leaves you

If you are already on Toast and IQ Grow is producing +8%, the arithmetic may well work. Do not let anyone talk you out of something that is paying for itself.

The question worth asking is a different one: should the AI be a tier at all?

We think not, which is why OpenPOS includes its AI manager from $149/month rather than selling it as an upgrade — it writes the pages, sends the campaigns, and reprices the items as part of the subscription. And because it is an operator rather than an assistant, there is no Success Manager in the bundle to make it work.

To be straight about the trade: Toast is far larger, has a much broader hardware line, and has been doing this a great deal longer. If you need a fifteen-terminal deployment with deep enterprise support, that is their turf and we will not pretend otherwise. What we will argue is narrower and, we think, harder to dispute — an AI layer that costs $5,988 a year and requires a human operator is not AI at the center of the product. It is AI sold next to it.
